Mentorship Program

The Mentorship Program is two new initiatives, student mentorship and professional mentorship, to facilitate conversations, provide guidance and open up new opportunities to students.

Mentoring is a critical component of a healthy studio culture. After a successful pilot program in 2023, the Architecture Program is hosting two mentorship initiatives open to all undergraduate and graduate students in 2024: Student Mentorship and Professional Mentorship. The principles of this program start with a shared understanding of mutual respect, a collaborative attitude, enthusiastic critique and the necessity to value one another’s unique perspectives. This program attempts to more effectively structure a positive mentorship culture, building on decades of tradition at the University of Maryland.

In the Professional Mentorship Program, students are paired with a professional mentor for one-on-one mentorship, for one semester. Professional designers and architecture-adjacent practitioners from local, national and international firms and universities have been generous enough to volunteer their time to speak directly with students. Over the course of a semester, students built a bond with a new mentor that can open new doors for them as they look beyond their time at UMD. Topics of discussion range from how to navigate architecture school, career opportunities, design conversation, portfolio critique and current trends in the design field. Much of this program is virtual and meetings occur every two weeks.

In the Student Mentorship Program, students support one another in a mentorship pod, consisting of a graduate student leader and undergraduate students at different levels of their education. This program allows students to meet one another in a safe and create new connections that might not have otherwise occurred without this structure. Graduate students and upperclassmen offer guidance to underclassmen, and help build a sustained culture of mentorship and comradery.
