Historic Preservation Specialist

As a Historic Preservation Specialist, you will furnish expert advice and exercise program support ensuring regional compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and related regulatory guidance.

Your major job duties are as follows:

  • Serves as an adviser on historic preservation matters to the Regional Commissioner (RC), Public Building Service (PBS), as well as senior management staff from PBS and other General Service Administration (GSA) services.
  • Answers questions and addresses inquiries on historic preservation matters, bringing potential or proposed historic preservation concerns and initiatives to the attention of senior officials; determining the proper course of action; and assuring implementation of historic preservation laws and directives in support of and coinciding with GSA development plans and programs.
  • Furnishes expert advice on a variety of significant historic preservation matters affecting construction of major and minor facilities, repair, and alteration/disposal of existing historic facilities, as well as on future development plans for the Region. -Provides support for all regional historic preservation programs, developing new approaches to historic preservation concerns on researching the feasibility and soundness of alternatives proposed by others. 
  • Complies with NHPA investigation into potential problems through contacts with Federal, state, and local officials, including mandatory consultation necessary to receive project clearance. Reviews and evaluates GSA new construction, repair and alteration, disposal, design and construction projects, and lease actions impacting historic properties to secure approval from the State Historic Preservation Offices and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
  • Represents GSA at meetings with local and state officials, Congressional and judicial representatives, private firms, public and private organizations, including citizens’ groups, and private citizens where substantive formal participation by local intergovernmental bodies may have major input in the development and decision-making process relative to GSA projects and associated historic preservation matters.
  • Provides guidance to project team members to ensure that areas of historic and/or archaeological concern are sufficiently addressed throughout the project to ensure compliance with all laws and regulations.
  • Resolves problems or conflicts impeding project progress, assuring that agency Division and staff personnel work together effectively in the timely completion of projects
