Biography

Naomi A. Sachs, PhD, MLA, EDAC is an Assistant Professor in the University of Maryland Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture. She is also Founding Director of the Therapeutic Landscapes Network (www.healinglandscapes.org) and Co-Editor of the peer-reviewed journal, Health Environments Research & Design. Dr. Sachs’ work focuses on nature’s positive role in human health and well-being. She has collaborated on numerous research and teaching projects with UMD faculty in departments such as Architecture, Computer Science, Information Studies, Kinesiology, Planning, and Public Health. Dr. Sachs teaches a research methods class and undergraduate and graduate design studios. Through her Health in Access to Nature and Design Living Lab, Dr. Sachs’ current research interests include: Teaching and fostering empathy in designers; landscapes for libraries; and use of the Healthcare Garden Evaluation Toolkit for post-occupancy evaluation.
