Transforming Waste

Architecture and design are ultimately about problem solving. Our current fast-food, throw-away culture cannot continue as a sustainable habit. Architecture is unique in its ability to directly influence the world we live in through the design process and the choices architects make. Incorporating the overwhelming amount of waste society produces into building could significantly mitigate our harmful environmental footprint. This exhibit will showcase projects of the design laboratory REFUNC from the Netherlands and the functional found object studio Salvaging Creativity from York, PA. Using their innovative solutions as an example, we hope to bring attention to the issue of waste and how to transform it into something positive. The exhibit will also document the process and results of the two-day workshop with REFUNC, where students from across disciplines come together for a high intensity hands-on maker session.
