Downtown Laurel, Maryland - Urban Renewal Proposal

The three sites studied by the University of Maryland Fall 2002 Graduate Urban Design Studio all typify the kinds of "Inside the Beltway" places that will increasingly require design and planning attention if Smart Growth is to fulfill its promise. These studies look at the urban design potential for three sites along the proposed inner Purple Lone light rail transit line: Chevy Chase Lake, Takoma/Langley and Riggs/University. The point of departure for the studio was to investigate the potential for Transit-Oriented Development in each of these three locations focusing specifically on underdeveloped land that might readily be transformed with the arrival of transit. The availability of transit has proven to be one of the strongest factors in the transformation of place, and its potential in these locations is considerable.
