National Park Service, American Indian Liaison Office

During summer 2011, I interned with the National Park Service in the American Indian Liaison’s Office. As part of my internship I served as the teaching assistant for their Foundations of Indian Law class, which covered the fundamentals of American Indian law, United States Trust Responsibility, and treaty obligations for Park Service staff. This was a very interesting class and I learned a lot about the government-to-government relationship between Native American tribes and the United States. It was also interesting to learn about the legal relationship that exists between Native American tribes and the U.S. Park Service. The second part of my internship was focused on developing a course text for the Foundations of Indian Law II class. This class will look at the legal cases relating to Native American Sacred sites and treaty rights.
This internship allowed me to look at preservation in a different way. I learned a great about the preservation of culture and the importance of traditional cultural properties and sacred sites. The internship gave me an opportunity to learn about the preservation of both tangible and intangible culture. I found that my courses in preservation policy and preservation law were particularly useful in fulfilling the assignments I was given as part of my internship. This was wonderful opportunity to put what I learned in class to use in a real world work environment.
