Review Process Packet Overview

REQUIRED MATERIALS TO SUBMIT

Deadline: February 1 of each calendar year for Admission to the Studio Sequence

Review Process Application - Fall 2008 (PDF)

A.    APPLICATION FORM

  • Place one copy in the first page of your portfolio.
  • Submit one copy with the rest of your application packet.

B.    TRANSCRIPTS (Do not place in portfolio)

  • Submit official transcripts of academic record for all college/universities previously attended.
  • Transcripts from the University of Maryland may be unofficial and MUST be from TESTUDO so as to include your spring courses (as transcripts printed from TESTUDO do not include identification, be sure to include your name and University ID number).
  • For students who have transferred to the University, the School will attempt to secure the transcripts of your previous institutions from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, but it is still your responsibility that we receive them by the stated deadline.

C.     ESSAY (Do not place in portfolio)
You must write a 1-2 page(s) typed essay on one of the following:

  • Describe your favorite building and its architectural significance;
  • Describe the work of your favorite architect and the significance of his or her architectural contributions.

Please note, this is not a research paper.  Please describe your thoughts and opinions as opposed to reporting only the facts.

D.     PREREQUISITE COURSE REVIEW FORM (Do not place in portfolio)
Complete the prerequisite course form with the courses you have taken and the related requirement it fulfills.

E.     LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION (Do not place in portfolio)
Two letters of recommendation are required as part of your application.  If possible, please submit with application in a sealed envelope with signature from recommender over the seal.

  • Your ARCH 242 Instructor/Teaching Assistant (TA) will automatically provide one letter of recommendation. You need not request this letter.
  • Your second letter of recommendation should come from an individual adequately familiar with your academic background or work experience, so that they may competently judge your probable success as an architecture student; recommender must be one of the following: a) Instructors (professors or TA’s) from the following courses: ARCH, ARTH, ARTT, GEOG, HISP, HONR, LARC, URSP, an “H” level course, or College Park Scholars. b) Employers in the fields of architecture, art, landscape architecture, historic preservation, or planning.
Letters of recommendation from high school teachers are not acceptable.

Submit the two letters of recommendation prior to the February 1 deadline to the following address:

F.    PORTFOLIO
Submit a portfolio by the stated deadline; for identification purposes, include a copy of the initial Application Form with your portfolio. Please see the attached sheet for details and guidelines regarding the contents of the portfolio.

G.    LETTER OF CIRCUMSTANCE (OPTIONAL)
You may optionally submit an additional personal statement that describes any extenuating circumstances relevant to your application.
