Dr. Marie Howland is professor of urban planning and Director of the Urban and Regional Planning and Design Ph.D. program at the University of Maryland. Dr. Howland's expertise is in the areas of urban economics and regional and local economic development. She has master's degree from U.C. Berkeley in City and Regional Planning and a Ph.D. in Urban Studies and Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Scott leads the innovation mapping and professional development training projects. He is a doctoral candidate in Urban and Regional Planning and Design at the University of Maryland where he also teaches graduate courses in economic development. His dissertation entitled A Network Model of Regional Innovation Clusters and their Influence on Economic Growth develops new methods of visualizing regional innovation clusters and modeling the effects of innovation on economic growth. Scott holds a Masters in Community and Regional Planning from Temple University and a Bachelor's from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. |

Naka Matsumoto is a Ph.D. candidate in the Urban and Regional Planning and Design program at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is interested in how diverse groups of people work together and how policy and physical environments help people to do so. She is a licensed architect in Japan and has had a variety of work experiences in private and public organizations |

Prior to starting his Ph.D. in the Urban and Regional Planning and Design program at the University of Maryland, College Park, Qiao conducted research on land-use and the housing market in China. His focus as a Ph.D candidate is on urban economics and planning, applying quantitative methods to examine urban theories. |

Alison is a Masters student in the Urban Studies and Planning department where she plans to explore links between economic development approaches and social equity. Prior to her graduate studies, Alison implemented international health programs focused on strengthening the private health sector's response to HIV/AIDS, family planning, and child health. She holds two Bachelors degrees in American Studies and French from the University of Maryland College Park. |

Jeffrey P. Tiell is a Ph.D candidate in the Urban and Regional Planning and Design program at the University of Maryland, College Park. His academic interests include how communities cope with loss, community action and participatory-based research, social and spatial justice in planning, transformative education in planning, and the value of institution building and collaborative governance. Mr. Tiell received his A.B. from Brown University and a Masters in City Planning (MCP) from the University of Pennsylvania. |
