Carl N. Ruskin Memorial Lectureship Fund

The Carl N. Ruskin Memorial Lectureship Fund was established in memory of a distinguished alumnus of the Community Planning program. At the time of his tragic death in 1987, he was Chief of Planning and Urban Design in the Department of Housing and Community Development, City of Baltimore. The purpose of the fund is to bring important practitioners and scholars to Baltimore each year to address issues of "The Neighborhood and the City." Recent lecturers have included Norman Krumholz, Robert Woodson, Kennedy Smith, Tupper Thomas, Rolan Anglin and Henry Sanoff.

Since the late 1980's, the University of Maryland's Urban Studies and Planning Program has sponsored the Ruskin Lecture. This is made possible by contributions from many individuals and organizations. Contributions are welcome and should be made to the Ruskin Lectureship Fund, addressed to the Urban Studies and Planning Program at the University of Maryland, College Park. On-line giving is also available.

Melvin R. Levin Planning Leadership Fund

Professor Melvin Levin, 1924 - 1999, greatly contributed to the city planning field and the University of Maryland's Urban Studies and Planning program. Dr. Levin authored a dozen books on regional planning, transportation, immigration, continuing education, and public policy. He was a planning consultant in Massachusetts and Kansas, principal researcher for the Mass Transportation Commission, president of the American Institute of Certified Planners, Director of the AICP commission, board member of the American Planning Association, Chair of Planning at Rutgers University, and chair of the Community Planning program at UMAB.

To commemorate these contributions and his leadership in the planning field, the Levin Family and the Urban Studies and Planning Program at the University of Maryland have established the Melvin R. Levin Planning Leadership Fund. Dr. Levin's leadership qualities were exemplified in his chairmanship of academic city planning programs at Boston University, Rutgers, and the University of Maryland at Baltimore, and his presidency of the AICP from 1986 to 1988.

The Melvin R. Levin Planning Leadership Fund will support activities that promote leadership abilities among students in the University of Maryland's Urban Studies and Planning Program. This will include support for the University of Maryland's Academy for Leadership to conduct leadership training for all second-year students, and invite widely recognized national leaders in the planning field to participate. Our goal is to create an interest-bearing endowment with the University of Maryland Foundation.

We welcome your tax-deductible contribution to Melvin R. Levin Planning Leadership Fund to honor the memory of Dr. Levin. Please make your check payable to "The University of Maryland Foundation" with Mel Levin Fund written in the bottom left corner. On-line giving is also available.
