Certificate Programs
Certificate in Historic Preservation (HISP) / Master of Community Planning
Urban Studies & Planning has joined with programs in Architecture, Anthropology, American Studies, History and Landscape Architecture to sponsor a 24-credit certificate program in historic preservation. Credits for the preservation program are accepted for the M.C.P., so that with careful selection of electives a student can complete both programs within the 51-credit framework. Requests for information and applications to the Certificate Program in Historic Preservation should be addressed to Urban Studies & Planning. Letters of application should explain the applicant's interest in the subject and describe any previous preservation experience. The list of approved courses for the Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation requires the successful completion of 24 credit hours taken from the list of approved courses, and includes the following:
Required: HISP 600 (should be taken in the first semester of Certificate work), HISP 700 (must be taken in the last semester of Certificate work) and a 3-credit course dealing with preservation law
Recommended: 3-credit fieldwork internship (frequently taken during the summer as HISP 619)
In addition: 12 credits in courses offered by the sponsoring disciplines and approved by the student's mentor

There are a number of university-wide certificate programs that may be obtained concurrently with the completion of the program's master's degree. If there is a department or program you are interested in, it is recommended that you inquire with them directly. Some possibilities are listed below.
The Latin American Studies Center Certificate Program
A fledgling program, the Certificate currently offers courses at the undergraduate level (400-level courses count towards our degree, up to a total of 12 credits). Interested students should contact the Center at 301-405-3665.School of Public Affairs Certificate Program
The School of Public Affairs offers six specialized certificate programs, each of which requires 18 credit hours of courses in the School. The offering of specializations includes methods of policy analysis; national security policy; public management; public policy and private enterprise; housing finance and development; and environmental policy. Course work toward this Certificate is designed to supplement the URSP curriculum, but may be incorporated into your degree program as a specialization if you are able to obtain approval from your mentors in the Urban Studies & Planning Program AND the Women's Studies Program. Students must be working toward a Master's degree in order to apply. The Certificate requires the completion of 18 core credit hours, as well as 9 other credits chosen in consultation with their mentor in the Women's Studies Program. Center on Aging, Graduate Gerontology Certificate Program
Requires the completion of 18 credit hours in gerontology, of which 9 must be taken from a list of core courses, another 3 to 6 credits taken as an internship, and the remaining credits chosen from either the core or complementary courses in gerontology. Master's level Certificate candidates must complete either a Master's thesis or two seminar papers on an aging-related topic, depending on Departmental requirements.
