The University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation hosted this two-day event on April 9 and 10, 2010 to memorialize Tom Schumacher's ideas, influence and unique and profound insights. The Schumacher Symposium provided a public academic venue to celebrate the teaching career of Tom Schumacher. Finally, the scholarship and commentary from the forum will form a portion of a book featuring a collection of 10-15 articles by Schumacher.
The symposium brought together architects and scholars, many of them former students and colleagues of Tom's, to discuss themes of importance to him in areas where he made significant contributions to the discipline. The event was higlighted with a keynote lecture by Michael Graves, FAIA, FAAR. The event closed with a dinner to raise funds for the Thomas L. Schumacher Scholarship, supporting architecture students traveling to Italy for study in University of Maryland programs.
