In 1996, a Carnegie Foundation report on architectural education posed a radical idea that intended to bridge the gap between students and their future practice. Authors Ernest Boyer and Lee Mitgang envisaged a “unified profession,” in which firms and the academy collaborate to strengthen “the educational experience of students during school, creating a more satisfying system of internship after graduation, and extending learning throughout professional life.”

The University of Maryland’s Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development honored five outstanding individuals on March 6, 2018 for their innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to real estate development. The 2018 Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Real Estate Awards recognized Horning Brothers’ Joseph Horning and David Roodberg, Kelly Sweeny McShane, Abraham Rosenthal and Adrian Washington for their outstanding work in revitalization and placemaking, creative problem-solving, collaboration and long-term solutions to urban challenges in the state, region and beyond.

Since 1913, the Tau Sigma Delta honor society has celebrated the achievements of students who are academically thriving in the field of architecture and other allied disciplines. Dr. Sonia Hirt, Dean of the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, has been elevated to the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) College of Fellows. This prestigious honor recognizes Hirt’s outstanding contributions to both the profession and society.  Dr. Hirt will be inducted this April at a special ceremony in New Orleans.

Since the beginning of time, the forest has encompassed the necessary elements to invent, grow and sustain life. It shelters and provides nourishment, carves out spaces without interest and adherence to spatial norms, insulates and amplifies. It’s no wonder that the ecosystem of the forest is teeming with life, with city-like environments on a natural scale. It is equally not surprising, that this terrestrial environment has captivated and inspired human civilizations for centuries.
