Office Hours

The office is open from 9:00AM to 5:00PM on weekdays. Enter the building using the bridge on Campus Drive (across the street from the entrance to the Art/Sociology Building) and walk straight ahead to reach the office.

Driving Directions

DRIVING from Maryland and Northern Virginia

From the DC Beltway (I-495), take exit 28B/Route 650 South (New Hampshire Avenue) toward Takoma Park.

  1. At the second traffic light on New Hampshire Avenue (comes up quickly) turn left onto Adelphi Road.
  2. Stay on Adelphi Road to University Boulevard (MD 193).
  3. Immediately after going through the MD-193 intersection, get into the left turning lane.
  4. Turn left at the light onto Campus Drive (UMUC/Marriott is on your left).
  5. Stay on Campus Drive until you reach the traffic circle.
  6. Before 4 p.m.: Turn right at the circle for hourly paid parking in Mowatt Garage. After 4 p.m.: Turn left at the circle for free parking in Lot 1. (Note: Read signs carefully to avoid being ticketed.)
  7. The School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation is at the corner of Campus and Mowatt Drives. There are three 30-minute metered spaces in the school's lot for short-term visitors.

 

DRIVING from DC

Go north on North Capitol Street (from the Capitol or the 3rd Street Tunnel).

  1. Take the access side street off North Capitol immediately before the intersection with Rhode Island Avenue (Route 1).
  2. Take Rhode Island Avenue north through DC to the Maryland line (about 5 miles).
  3. Just before you reach downtown College Park, turn left onto Guilford Road.
  4. Guilford Road takes a right-hand jog before becoming Mowatt Lane (no street sign).
  5. Continue on Mowatt Lane onto the campus.
  6. Before 4 p.m.: The Mowatt Garage is the first large building on the right side of Mowatt Lane. Enter the garage for paid parking. After 4 p.m.: Stay on Mowatt Lane until the traffic circle. Proceed straight through the circle and enter Lot 1 for free parking. (Note: Read signs carefully to avoid being ticketed.)
  7. The School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation is at the corner of Campus and Mowatt Drives. There are three 30-minute metered spaces in the school's lot for short-term visitors. 

Parking

Paid Parking Near the School - Mowatt Lane Garage

From the intersection of Campus Drive and Mowatt Lane, turn right at the circle and drive past the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and the Smith Business School. You will reach the Mowatt Garage on your left, which has covered parking.

The Mowatt Lane Garage has a brand new electronic pay station system. Detailed instructions are listed below.

1. Park in Mowatt Lane Garage, choose numbered space

2. Take note of the space number, you will need it at the station

3. Locate closest pay station

4. Press [OK] button to start

5. Enter your space number

6. Enter the amount of time: 6 Hours

7. Swipe a credit card, insert cash or enter a validation code for payment

8. If you use a validation code please retain the receipt for the front desk.

Free Parking Near the School (after 4 p.m. and on weekends only)
Turn left at the circle and enter Lot 1. Read signs carefully. You will be ticketed if you park in Lot 1 without a permit before 4 p.m.   

Walking to the School

From the Marriott at UMUC

Go out the main entrance and take a left onto Campus Drive. Walk to the traffic circle and continue straight through the circle on Campus Drive. The Architecture Building is the first building on the right. Walk across the bridge into the Architecture Building and take the stairs down to the first floor, where the Auditorium and Gallery are located.

 

From Lot 1

Walk back to the traffic circle and take a left onto Campus Drive. The Architecture Building is the first building on the right. Walk across the bridge into the Architecture Building and take the stairs down to the first floor, where the Auditorium and Gallery are located.

 

From Mowatt Garage

Take the Mowatt Road sidewalk toward the traffic circle (you will pass the Smith School of Business). The Architecture Building is on the right just before the traffic circle. Enter the double doors directly into the Auditorium and Gallery Foyer.    

Train (Metrorail)

The University of Maryland is served by the Green Line of the Washington Metrorail. The Green Line is connected to all other Metro lines in Washington, DC (Gallery Place, L'Enfant Plaza and Fort Totten are the main transfer points).

 

  1. Take the Green Line toward Greenbelt and exit at College Park-UMD.
  2. Exit the Metro station to the left and walk up the stairs to the bus waiting area.
  3. The University provides free shuttle bus service to the center of campus (no student ID required for Metro shuttle). Take Route 104 (College Park Metro) to the last stop across from the Stamp Student Union.
  4. Walk up the hill on Campus Drive. Follow the street as it curves left past the turtle planter. At the next split in the road, Campus Drive turns sharply to the right. Follow Campus Drive to the right.
  5. After the turn, the Architecture Building is on the left. Take the pedestrian bridge across to the second-floor entrance.
  6. Once inside, walk straight ahead above the Great Space, through the double doors to the main office at the end of the corridor. Walk downstairs to reach the auditorium and gallery.

Plane

 The University of Maryland is served by three major airports--Reagan Washington National (DCA), Baltimore-Washington International (BWI), and Washington Dulles (IAD). Following are suggestions for travel to campus from these airport locations.

 

Reagan Washington National (DCA)

  • Located in Arlington, Virginia, this airport is located about 15 miles south of College Park. Travel can be slow through downtown Washington, DC during rush hours; approximate driving time is 40 minutes.
  • You can take the Metrorail from the airport.
    • Take the Yellow Line (toward Mt. Vernon Square/Ft. Totten), transferring to the Green Line (toward Greenbelt), and get off at College Park/U of MD station.
    • The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the metrorail station. 
    • Get off the Shuttle-UM at the Stamp Student Union, the last stop
    • Walk up the hill and follow the street as it curves left follow the street past the turtle planter.  
    • The next “split”  in the road, is Campus Drive which takes a nearly right hand turn, as you walk up this  stretch of Campus Drive, you will see the School on your left and the pedestrian bridge across to our 2nd floor entrance. 
    • Once inside walk straight ahead through the Great Space, through the double doors to the main office at the end of the corridor.
  • Super Shuttle is also a convenient option. The cost for one way trip is $26 for the first passenger and $8 for each additional guest.
  • Taxi service from the airport to campus will cost approximately $30.00.

 

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI)

  • Located just outside Baltimore, this airport is approximately 25 miles north of College Park. Driving time is approximately 35 minutes.
  • MARC Train service is available from the BWI Rail Station to College Park.
    • The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the metrorail station.
    • Get off the Shuttle-UM at the "M" (or second) stop for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Cross street and walk south toward Mitchell Building.
  • You can also take the Metrobus B30 to Greenbelt, transfer to Metrorail's Green Line (toward Branch Ave.), and get off at College Park/U of MD.  See above for information on the free shuttle to campus from the College Park/U of MD metrorail station.
    • Get off the Shuttle-UM at the Stamp Student Union, the last stop
    • Walk up the hill and follow the street as it curves left follow the street past the turtle planter.  
    • The next “split”  in the road, is Campus Drive which takes a nearly right hand turn, as you walk up this  stretch of Campus Drive, you will see the School on your left and the pedestrian bridge across to our 2nd floor entrance. 
    • Once inside walk straight ahead through the Great Space, through the double doors to the main office at the end of the corridor.
  • Super Shuttle is also a convenient option. The cost of a one way journey is $29 for the first passenger and $12 for each additional guest.
  • Taxi service from the airport to campus will cost approximately $50.00.

 

Washington Dulles International (IAD)

Located near Herndon, Virginia, this airport is about 35 miles southwest of College Park. Driving time is approximately one hour.

  • You can take the Metrobus 5A then Metrorail from the airport.
    • Bus service is available to take you to the L'Enfant Plaza Metrorail station where you will take the Green Line (toward Greenbelt) and get off at College Park/U of MD station.
    • The university's Shuttle-UM buses pick up university-bound passengers on the EAST side of the metrorail station.
    • Get off the Shuttle-UM at the Stamp Student Union, the last stop
    • Walk up the hill and follow the street as it curves left follow the street past the turtle planter.  
    • The next “split”  in the road, is Campus Drive which takes a nearly right hand turn, as you walk up this  stretch of Campus Drive, you will see the School on your left and the pedestrian bridge across to our 2nd floor entrance. 
    • Once inside walk straight ahead through the Great Space, through the double doors to the main office at the end of the corridor.
  • Super Shuttle is also a convenient option. The cost for a one way trip is $36 for the first passenger and $8 for each additional guest.
  • Taxi service from the airport to campus will cost approximately $60.00.
