About

I am an Registered Architect and LEED AP BD+C, currently living in Washington DC.  My passion is regenerative design, creating buildings and communities that serve to enrich both humanity and the rest of the ecosystem (not humanity at the expense of the ecosystem).  Regenerative design requires a holistic, systems-based approach to sustainability (for more information, see my website).  I have a diverse background that includes science and engineering as well as architecture.  My ultimate goal is to change the way we think, design, build and live by creating projects that are beautiful, well-crafted, efficient and healthy.  My approach to achieving these goals includes teaching and writing, as well as designing.

Employment

Meditch Murphey Architects, Chevy Chase, MD, US, Project Architect

In this position, I managed the project design process and documentation from preliminary design through contract administration. I helped prepare concept sketches, CAD drawings, specifications, bid documents, permit applications, etc. I evaluated contracts (A101, A107, A201, B101) and contractor proposals, reviewed drawings and shop drawings, submittals, requests for payment, change orders, etc.. Conducted site visits to review quality and completeness of the Work. Acted as a communication bridge between Contractor and Owner, and helped resolve questions and disputes related to the construction of the project.

My experience in this position included one residence certified at LEED Homes Platinum level, as well as several other 'green' residential projects

University of Maryland, College Park, MD, US, Lecturer

Served as a a Faculty Adviser to the 2011 Solar Decathlon team. The Solar Decathlon is a biannual event sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Teams from 18-20 U.S. and international universities (each lead by students with guidance from faculty) design and build a 1000 sq.ft. solar powered home and transport it to the competition site (Washington DC in 2011) and demonstrate their designs operation for judges and the visiting public. In 2011, the Maryland entry ("WaterShed") won first place in Architecture and in the competition overall. I helped guide students in the original design studio, then helped refine the architectural and engineering designs, and finally helped students craft the educational outreach and marketing materials for WaterShed.

In addition to the role as a Faculty Adviser above, I also served in that capacity for the National Federation for the Blind's Youth Slam - a summer project intended to teach visually challenged students about architecture and design.

I also taught the structural design and analysis courses for the School of Architecture, as well as seminars related to sustainability.
