Doctoral Admissions
The Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning and Design is a 39-credit program. The program is highly selective and individualized. Approximately seven students will be admitted each year. The deadline for applications for the following fall is January 1. Admissions are for fall semester only. We do not have a spring admission for URPD.
Students admitted to the doctoral program will be expected to have completed a master's degree in a related field including but not exclusively urban planning, architecture, historic preservation or landscape architecture. Students are expected to enter the Ph.D. program with two semesters of graduate level quantitative research methods. These courses can be taken after entrance to the program and prior to their advanced methods course.
Admission Requirements
Applicants are required to submit Graduate Record Exam scores, transcripts from all universities attended by the applicant, and three letters of recommendation, along with their University of Maryland application. While some students have been admitted as part time students, full time study is encouraged and given priority in the admissions process.
