Graduate Architecture Admissions

Admission to the Architecture Program is competitive. The general requirements of the graduate school must be fulfilled.
Eligibility
Applications from three categories will be considered:
- Candidates with a four-year baccalaureate (B.S.) degree (architecture or equivalent major).
- Candidates with a four-year baccalaureate (B.A. or B.S.) degree (major other than architecture) from an accredited college or university who successfully complete specified undergraduate prerequisites which are outlined by the School of Architecture.
- Candidates with a professional accredited degree, either a bachelor or master's degree in architecture.
Prerequisites
Additional requirements include: one semester of college level calculus, or successful high-school advanced-placement (AP) calculus exam, one semester of laboratory physics or successful high-school advanced-placement (AP) physics exam and college-level freehand drawing.
Application and Admission Requirements
In addition to completing the
University of Maryland Graduate Application, candidates will need to submit to the School:
- Application Form: Complete the electronic application form by published deadline
- Academic Credentials: Submit one set of unofficial transcripts of academic record for the B.A. or B.S. degree, to be accompanied by descriptions of courses taken to meet prerequisites.
- Statement of Goals, Research Interests, and Statement of Experiences: A 1000-2000 word statement of graduate goals, research interests, and experiences.
- Standardized Test Scores: Graduate Record Examination general scores. Test scores must be no more than five years old.
- Portfolio: Bound and not exceeding 9" x 12," containing reproductions of creative work including drawings, paintings, photographs, sculpture, sketches and architectural designs. PLEASE NOTE: The deadline for the submission of portfolios is Tuesday, January 15, 2009.
Application for admission to the Certificate Program in Historic Preservation, made simultaneously with applications to the Graduate School and the School, is in the form of a letter to the chair of the Committee on Historic Preservation. Admission into the program is contingent upon admission to the Graduate School and to one of the cooperating departments.
