ARCH 426 - Fundamentals of Architecture

Thematic introduction of a variety of skills, issues, and ways of thinking that bear directly on the design and understanding of the built world. (3 credits). Instructor: Guido Francescato.

WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT?

"Spatial images are the dreams of society. Wherever the hieroglyphics of any spatial image are deciphered, there the basis of social reality presents itself."

Siegfried Kracauer, On Employment Agencies: The Construction of a Space.
(N. Leach, Rethinking Architecture: A Reader in Cultural Theory, p. 59 - 64)

This course is designed to introduce you to three interrelated domains that bear upon the design of the built environment:

  • The ideas underlying architectural praxis (architectural theory).
  • The material manifestations of those ideas (architectural history).
  • The major themes (concepts, constructs) that have emerged at various times from the intersection of theory and history.
